About Jemma Brett

Therapeutic Counsellor

I am a Person Centered Counsellor who passionately believes that healing is not only possible but probable within the right therapeutic relationship. This is what I hope to bring to you through our therapeutic journey together. I feel it is important to build an authentic relationship based on openness, empathy and mutual trust and that within these conditions together we will harness your natural self healing process.

I believe in the change, growth and healing that occurs through having a safe and confidential space to talk through your worries. My approach promotes client autonomy, strongly believing you are the expert on you and together we can build on trusting your own judgements, in line with your values. This can be achieved by having that empathetic and non-judgmental other who sits alongside you in your struggles / pain / suffering. Helping to make sense of the confusion and finding some inner peace .

Alongside being a qualified therapeutic counsellor, I have a wealth of experience in working with families whose children live with social and emotional struggles due to their individual special needs. Neurodivergence and supporting parents are my specific areas of interest and where I feel I have lots of skills and knowledge to share and help.

My approach is non directive and gentle, I will work with you at your own pace to achieve the goals you set out to achieve.  When your life has been impacted by upset, adversity or trauma even the simplest things can feel distressing and overwhelming. Having a safe therapeutic space where you can talk through, explore and make sense of all this can help bring about the changes you need - facilitating understanding, acceptance, empowerment and well being once more.

I am passionate about the work that I do and am committed to helping you embrace the process of change!

What to Expect...

I offer a range of therapeutic services to support individuals and families with their emotional well-being. Entering a therapeutic relationship can be a bit daunting, especially for the first time. I want to make this process as easy as possible and am happy to make reasonable adjustments to the way I do things so that I can best meet your individual needs. If you have specific needs that you wish to share this can be really helpful either when you contact me via email or when we first talk. •After I receive a message from you expressing an interest in Counselling, Walk and Talk or Parenting Support I will respond back as soon as I am able via email. •For an initial consultation I am happy for us to talk on the phone for 10-15 minutes. We can then get an idea if I am the right therapist for you, whether you prefer online or telephone appointments and also discuss contracting and potential dates and times for sessions. If you opt for in-person support I currently offer Walk and Talk sessions in the North Leeds area, which can be discussed in more detail at this time. There will be no charge for this consultation and I will contact you via email to arrange a convenient time for this first conversation. •We will then book our initial appointment, in the first part of this session I share with you how I work and run through the contract in more detail. The rest of the session will be your space to discuss what you would like to achieve and start to explore any worries, stresses or challenges. •Most of my sessions are remote and for this online support I will send you a Zoom link for each session a few hours before. I will also attach a payment link for your convenience. You will need a quiet, private space for our session this gives you the flexibility to have your session wherever you feel most comfortable. I will also provide a welcoming space via Zoom whilst ensuring complete client confidentiality. •I am able to provide both short term and long term therapy, this will be dependant on your wishes and the type of support you feel you need. This is something that we can review throughout our time working together. Usually every 6 sessions. This includes working towards an ending when the time is right. •Sessions are at the same day and time each week. I understand we cannot always predict some eventualities i.e illness, but where possible I do request 48 hours notice of any cancellations then no fee will be charged. I will also be as flexible as possible if you need to reschedule and try and find an alternative time and date on occasion, when necessary. •I am a Person Centred counsellor, which means that I use this specific theoretical approach and techniques when it comes to helping people with their feelings and struggles. My aim is to offer you the support needed to manage any difficulties you are experiencing, we will do this together, through building a solid therapeutic relationship, my approach focuses on what you decide to bring to each session, with the trust and confidence that you are the expert on your life and within our safe, nurturing environment together we can find some answers and solutions to the struggles, obstacles and stresses that are impacting you. •I am registered member of British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work within their Ethical Framework. My registration number and logo is at the bottom of each page. Further information on this can be found on their website www.bacp.co.uk. •I am fully GDPR compliant and am registered with the ICO, as well as having an enhanced DBS on the update service. I take my clients data and privacy seriously. All data collected is kept securely in password protected electronic format only. I adhere to current data protection legislation, including the General Data Protection Regulation (EU/2016/679) (the GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003. •My fees are listed in the Services page, this is subject to review at the start of each new financial year and all clients will be given at least 4 weeks notice of any changes. Payment of fees is required before the start of the session, without this a session may not go ahead. Easy ways to pay can be discussed in the initial appointment. I hope this provides some helpful insight into what to expect when coming to counselling or parent support. I try to be as flexible and adaptable as I can and your comfort and safety is important. If there is anything further you’d like to know drop me a line and I will happily discuss further with you. Best Regards!
